Motorcycle Deal Checker puts the key checks on a used bike in one place: market price checks, open safety recalls, and links to theft, salvage and title checks. Choose a single report, a month pass or a year pass.

VIN lookups are coming soon. The checker isn't switched on yet, so no results are shown.

VIN decode (NHTSA vPIC)

From the U.S. government's official VIN decoder:

Theft and salvage (NICB VINCheck)

The National Insurance Crime Bureau's free VINCheck shows whether participating insurers have reported a vehicle stolen and not recovered, or as salvage. NICB limits it to 5 searches per day per IP address, and you run it on their site.

Sample reports

These three sample reports show the kind of used-bike price check we make, separate from the VIN checker, which is coming soon. Each one says which numbers are REAL asking prices found on Craigslist (with links and the date checked) and which are EXAMPLE DATA made up for illustration. Asking prices are not sold prices.

2012 Yamaha YZ450F

Listing being checked EXAMPLE DATA
2012 YZ450F, private seller, asking $5,200. Seller says "runs great, fresh top end," about 120 hours, aftermarket exhaust, no snow kit. Title: "has paperwork."

Market prices REAL

Asking prices seen on Craigslist, checked Nov 2, 2026. These are not sold prices. We found only two live 2012 listings, so this is a thin sample.

YearWhereAskingNotes
2012Igo, CA$4,500Seller says excellent condition, oil changed every 6 hours. No hours listed. Listing
2012Donnelly, ID$6,000Snowbike: includes a 2018 Timbersled kit, title in hand. Listing
2011Lucasville, OH$3,000Nearby year
2011Yuma, AZ$3,750Nearby year
2010Loveland, CO$4,000Nearby year, FMF exhaust

The snow kit adds real money, so a plain 2012 is asking about $4,500. 2010–2012 YZ450Fs are asking roughly $3,000–$4,500 without extras.

Fair range for a plain 2012

About $3,500–$4,500. Open around $3,500; walk away above about $4,500.

Hours guidance

Dirt bikes wear by engine hours, not miles. Ask for an hour meter photo and receipts for the last top-end and valve check. "Fresh top end" with no receipt is worth little. Frequent oil changes (like the Igo seller's every 6 hours) are a good sign.

Model checklist

  • Cold start: should fire without excessive kicking or cranking; listen for top-end rattle.
  • Valve clearances and the last top-end service, with receipts.
  • Clutch slip under load; check the basket for notches.
  • Fork seals, shock leaks, linkage and swingarm bearings (grab the rear wheel and rock it).
  • Frame and subframe for cracks or welds; bent bars or pegs suggest crashes.
  • Chain, sprockets, brakes, wheel bearings and spokes.

Title and theft check

Match the frame VIN to the title or registration. Be careful with "has paperwork" or bill-of-sale-only bikes. Check that the VIN stamp isn't ground or re-stamped.

Questions to ask the seller

  • How many hours, and when was the last top end? Do you have receipts?
  • Has it been raced, and has it ever been down hard?
  • Is the title in your name?
  • What's been changed from stock?

Red flags

  • Won't start cold in front of you, or is already warm when you arrive.
  • Smoke, oil in the airbox, or milky oil.
  • No title, or a name on the title that isn't the seller's.
Verdict: NEGOTIATE. At $5,200 the EXAMPLE listing is above what plain 2012s are asking on Craigslist. Offer around $3,500–$4,000 and walk away above about $4,500 unless there are receipts or extras.

Estimates are a guide, not a guarantee. Always inspect the bike in person and confirm the title before you pay.
